ANGLO- PORTUGUESE SOCIETY

WHAT WE DO

The Anglo-Portuguese Society promotes Portugal in the UK – its history, culture and traditions – through a busy programme of events, bringing together the young and young at heart.

The mission of the Society was laid down:

To foster the historic relationship between Britain and Portugal by developing the knowledge of people in Britain about Portugal, its people and culture.

It does so through various activities – chiefly lectures, conferences and events, but also exhibitions, demonstrations and illustrations of the intellectual, artistic and economic life of Portugal. The first lecture took place on 26th January 1939 with the renowned historian and Portuguese Scholar, Professor Edgar Prestage, marking the beginning of a diverse programme of events as well as the Library at Casa de Portugal. World War II limited the Society’s activities to a luncheon at Vintners Hall in July 1940, and it was not until 25th November 1946 that the Society held its first Annual Dinner, attended by the British Prime Minister.

Over the years social engagements have included dinners, lunches and receptions, as well as illustrated talks covering a huge range of subjects connected with Portugal. In June 1986 The Treaty of Windsor Ball was held at Osterley Park to celebrate the 600th anniversary of this alliance. The guests of honour were TRH The Prince and Princess of Wales.

The Anglo-Portuguese Society offers its Members a varied events programme which includes: three illustrated talks, in February, March and April; the Annual General Meeting followed by a Reception in June; a visit to a place of interest in September; a wine tasting in October; and the David Mynett Memorial Lecture together with the Ann Waterfall Award Presentation in November.

The Society maintains close links with the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce. We also support LUSO, the Portuguese Association Of Researchers & Students based in Manchester.
